It encouraging that in today's T&A Hopkin claims he wants to stay here. Now we have to act on it.
The cost of signing him may now be significantly less than if we were to lose him (and our top scorer in the process), then have to desperately look for a replacement in the remainder of the window and we ultimately drop into League 2.

McCartan doesn’t have the vision of Payne, league 2 is about his level.

It would be all change for McCartan - another manager, new squad, no Rahic... but he's laid a few sly digs at us since he left on his Twitter account so could imagine he wouldn't be desperate to return. More so in January from a promotion chasing side into a relegation battle.

He’s good, but he’s no Shaun Murray.

We need to cash in on Isherwood NOW. We can't afford to wait a couple of years for £5m +, we need to take circa £1m now.

A little birdie tells me that Payne’s Town contract is 15k pw, with city currently paying 5k pw contribution.
I think there’s a deal to be had where everyone meets in the middle. Free transfer in january, so town save a quarter mill. We give him a 2.5 year contact on 10k pw - which might sound mental, but it’s basically the equivalent of paying him what we pay him now, with a transfer fee of 650k. Which, again may sound mental, but you could easily see him being worth double or triple that inside 12 months.
Payne would have to give a bit, but it’d be a good contract.
And we could surely take 5k pw off the wage bill by shifting on Wright, Riley, Reeves, Jones.
Let’s get it done.

You'd be wanting him on a 3 year contract with an option for that sort of money.. as the half a year would be wasted as we're fighting relegation.. then that only gives us 1 season to try get out of League one before his contract then becomes an issue again.
Would he sign a 4 year deal with us, I'm not so sure. He's clearly enjoying his football now and it appears (if you believe Hopkin) he's happy here.
I've heard we're testing the water with Town and are going to make a bid in January for £300k

There’s a footballer in there, he was on the fringes of the Man Utd team under van Gaal, I just think the step up from U23 football, and at a club on its arse under Rahic, has been too much for him.

Not signing 6 Omari Patrick’s on trainee wages and hoping one will be any good.

I agree, we were stupid when we only gave Wyke a 2.5yr deal and it came back to bite us on the arse as we sold him for fuck all. Give Payne a 3.5yr deal with an option for another and when it comes to selling him there's no excuse to sell cheap.

Yeah fair point. I’d have no problem with a longer term contract - bottom line is, with a level of ambition there’s a deal to be had, and it’s the perfect opportunity to invest in quality with a high likelihood of resale value.

His Agent will be pushing for a shorter term contract with a few to moving him on within 18 months. Sadly I think we'll miss out if that is the level of his wages. especially due to the amount of financial waste we have within the squad.
However as we have said, Rupp could easily make his money back on him and I mean all his money not just the outlay for Payne
