I think Bruenker has been the highlight. If we can manage to fend off all the interest in him this summer, then we'll have a player we can build our team around. Already hoping there is a Scottish pre season tour.

Worse than our collapse in 2009. The difference this time is we saw it unfolding in January and we did nothing about it.

My highlights of the season were Wyke’s hat trick against Bristol Rovers and the ref being given the wrong number from his assistant so walked around Benny Hill esq.
My lowlights in no particular order:
Summer transfer window Omari fucking Patrick Dominic fucking Poleon Edin ‘the cunt’ Rahic Sacking of McCall Grayson’s football ‘style’ The happy clapping cunts with their head in the sand Edin ‘the cunt’ Rahic January transfer window Fans being blamed for the poor form Blatant lies from the board and the feeling of being taken for a ride Edin ‘the cunt’ Rahic

Looked like they had never played football before, what the fuck was that little full back all about, he didn't even know where to stand at a corner.

Yeah id taken that into account but still the best 40 mins (they should have been 2 up in first 5). It shows how dire we have been and the miracle that McCall had worked with that shower of shit

Looked like they had never played football before, what the fuck was that little full back all about, he didn't even know where to stand at a corner. To be fair it was probably the only game this season where we played on the floor, going through the middle and trying to get behind them - no long balls up to Wyke or going backwards/ sideways when attacking- and they were struggling to handle us. Should have been 4-5 up at half time but composure in front of goal throughout the side is abysmal. Why the fuck we reverted after to the slowest and most predictable wing play played by players who aren't really wingers is beyond me.

It's been a long and strange season this one. We lined up looking a weaker side than the prior one, but yet somehow - up until January, we were doing better points-wise than the previous year. Little by little though it started to fall apart with Chicksen and Field unable to adequately fill Meredith's shoes as a focal point of the side, Gilliead unable to contribute anything like Marshall had done, Reeves' very hit and miss performances proving what amazing consistency Cullen had displayed and McCarten's failure to make an impact validating the praise that Clarke had got from Parkinson and later McCall. Clarke was a poor finisher but his link up play and vision is something we've missed a lot this season. Vincelot operating in midfield has, for me, been a sad site to see. He looks a really really poor midfielder (but better centre back) and it's been, in my humble opinion, a bit of a kryptonite to the team that he was captain. Law was better last season because he had better players in the XI but this season hasn't had the movement around him - leading to those frustrating sideways runs across the field ending with nothing. Perhaps it's unfair, but I have the impression that Law doesn't really have the stomach for a fight and is a little bit lacking in commitment to "the cause" - especially without McCall around. He's a talent, Law, but he's almost like a luxury player as he doesn't naturally go to close down or tackle anyone. NKP was better in the more settled back four we had the previous year and he's not improved. McMahon has also got worse and despite his gestures to the crowd and so-on - strikes me as someone who doesn't give a shite about the club and is just there for the cash and the status of being a bit of a joker around "the lads".
McCall had hinted during the early part of the season that the tools he had in his arsenal were inadequate, for example his explanation of how the style of play was impacted by the fact that we had 2 left footed centre backs; but yet the January window was a total failure once the only bright light McGowan became ruled out. The owners failed to back McCall in January (after saying that they would) and on reflection it's so harsh that a few games later, having not been backed with the arrival of any good new players, he was shown the door having been told he was effectively not pulling his weight. That, amongst possibly other things, led to the players effectively withdrawing their labour for a period of time after Grayson's appointment. Listening to the commentary of the Blackpool game, it sounded like the players weren't even trying and even after that horror show there were other games that looked more like friendlies in terms of how disinterested in the result our players seemed. McCall felt that he should have been given more time and that he believed the tide would turn even with the poor business done in the window. Having missed out on the playoffs by 8 points, you've got to wonder had McCall stayed and some of the players not stopped trying - would we have made it into the playoffs? I think there's a good chance we would have. We can't have done any worse surely than we have under Grayson following the McCall sacking. The owners got this one badly wrong and we've got to hope that this poor judgement on their behalf won't keep arising.
The styles of play between the early part of the season and the end of the season are staggeringly far apart. Under McCall we looked to "play", which seemed to work away from home but not at home. I am all for sexy football however possession stats mean absolutely nothing when you've been sucker punched by the oppositions only attack, which seemed to happen quite a lot this season. The opposite style is what we've ended up seeing in the last few months, percentage balls hoisted up in the hope that they will stick or lead to a mistake. That's not good to watch but I personally will forgive Grayson for that - due to the lack of players at his disposal who either a) have the ability to do something a bit less agricultural or b) could be arsed raising their game for the run-in (for reasons best known to themselves).
It's now a fairly solid conventional Cow's Arse wisdom that the permanent appointment of Grayson is our best hope for any near-term success so we'll have to keep our fingers crossed for that, because we need the ruthless almost total clear out of the current squad that he's said we need. We have to build again and it's to be hoped that the manager, whoever he is, is not constrained in the way that McCall and later Grayson has been this season. It might take time but what we need to do is start to put together a nucleus of players like we had before - genuine quality for this level mixed with very astute loans and adequate squad depth. With anything else we will continue to fail in my opinion. On that basis I hope that the development squad idea gets shelved as it was by Parkinson after it failed last time.
Positives for this season are the performances of Kilgallon and Callum Guy and after that I am struggling to think of anything. Even Robinson, who is widely admired by the fans, looks to me to be a bit of a punt. Perhaps it's the pitch or something but he looked very ragged at times and a little bit fragile. I think if defenders lay the smackdown on him early he gets rattled. He's also a regular visitor to the injury table.
All in all, a major disappointment and the factors that led to that are worrying for us as fans. The owners have vaguely apologised for their mistakes but they have been very non specific, which - as Tawheed pointed out - perhaps makes sense at this point. We won't know though whether or not they have learned from the mistakes this season until we line up again in August. I have the feeling it's going to be a long and painful summer finding out, but it should make for good forum discussion. Lastly and on that point, this season has seen the rise of the excellent Cow's Arse forum; which now stands out as the best place for honest Bantamism. Well done to Hobhead and all those who put the effort into making this site tick.
