Woke up this morning to an e mail from the club encouraging me to gamble on its Lottery. As someone who has had past problems with addiction I'm surprised the club is doing this.

Totally sympathise, you can’t watch football without gambling ads these days, the EFL is sponsored by Sky Bet, half the PL and championship teams have Far Eastern gambling companies as shirt sponsors. Don’t agree with it but it’s not the club’s fault.

Seriously though, not the clubs fault. Similar to how alcohol will be served in the ground despite the presence of alcoholics on matchday.
The wider issue of gambling, and the number of betting firms involved in football is a real concern though. Needs looking at.

Indeed - the club will probably be tied into some kind of sponsorship agreement every club is collectively part of. And without wanting to be a Debbie Downer, agree - it seems to be rampant in football these days. Not against having a bet or telling anyone not to, but for people who are tempted there's a ridiculous amount of temptation. I've never actually bet on anything - I just buy the odd lottery ticket once in a while - but I watch a lot of youtube and I would say when I watch on my TV 90% of the adverts are for online gambling companies, with offers of free this and that for new customers. Can see why people fall into the traps. I can imagine it's hard for some people if they're surrounded by it and it can be easily accessed on their phones. At least with booze theres the physical element of actually buying and consuming it, when its online and a bit invisible you're probably less aware of whats going on.

It’s easy to assume it doesn’t happen, but is there a risk that having huge betting companies so closely involved in the game risks an integrity problem around things like match fixing? Some of the shit you can bet on these days, you don’t even need to get closer to throwing a game, you can engineer other stuff pretty easily. Time of first corner, throw in, spurious shite like that. And then you look at what happened with Wigan….

Have I ever recounted my Richard Ravenhill story on here? Go on, spill.... Morning of the home leg of the Burton play off semi, I'm in Subway at Greengates getting a bit of breakfast on my way to work and Ricky is already in there, he's having a laugh with the guy behind the counter, city fan and they're talking about the match that night, I get involved too and he's saying that they're hoping to be able to take a lead there to defend for the second leg etc. Anyway, he gets his sandwich and he's leaving, and he gets to the door and stops, Columbo style, and comes back in, "Tonight, first throw in, Burton, get on it!" he whispers conspiratorially and departs. Only that evening when straight from the kick off, he launches the ball over the wingers head straight in to touch do I recall this. I should probably say allegedly or something here, what with this being a public forum and all.
