He’s got the money to run this club in a shrewd way. Run a tight ship but if the right player comes available that requires a little further investment then make the commitment. Signing a few quality players for a bit more money rather than a boatload of speculative punts for peanuts is far more likely to get him a return on his investment. Payne on a permanent, for example, would likely pay dividends in a season or two. Ironically, getting rid of the ‘expert’ in favour of the hobbyist will, in all likelihood, see us being run more professionally. I’m liking Rupp so far.

When and only when he gets some decent ale in at the tea bars we'll know he's fully committed.

Yeah I'm liking Rupp so far too. His biggest black mark is letting Edin loose. But in fairness, and contrary to what I originally thought, he didn't know Edin THAT well. I thought they were long standing mates/business associates, but that wasn't the case. And much of what Edin outlined as a strategy is exactly whats needed. i.e. leveraging relationships with local giants of the game and investing in younger players with resale value.
Looking at the potential of City, it doesn't need a huge amount of investment to get us moving up a level. We should be in a position of being able to self-finance a group of 16-18 good League One players, along with 3-4 decent young players like Wood, Colville. What's really need then, is for the owner(s) to finance the 4,5 or 6 top quality players that make a huge difference at this level. The likes of Payne. Throw in a couple of decent loans and you're set. And if you get the recruitment and financing right for the 4-6 players of real quality, its a genuine investment. THOSE are the players that give you real re-sale opportunity. Payne is a classic example. We're probably shelling out a couple of hundred grand between now and the summer. IF we sign him on a free, and give him a 3 year contract on say £7k per week, that's the equivalent of signing him for 400k and giving him a fairly typical league one wage of 4 grand a week. And there's every chance you can sell him on for 7 figures if we stay in league one. We need to be smarter and do more deals like that - build the quality of the team and spend money wisely.
Looking at a 3 year plan for promotion - a proper one - It probably needs an owner willing to under-write about a million of possible overspend against our natural wage budget each season. And to add probably 2 million in transfer fee's over the 3 years. A £5m investment. Rupp has that sort of money - and if we do bring in someone like Whelan, that investment can be shared. And that amound discounts the possibility of cup runs and player sales. Do it right and build enough quality, you'll make inroads into that figure.
This year should dispel the gomper notion that spending money is a risk - no, we spent our biggest budget for 15 years this season and we're in a relegation fight. Its about how you spend it. One Jack Payne instead of a Wright, Riley and Brunker. Quality over quantity.
I think Rhodes will be selling a similar message to Rupp.

Yeah,I keep hearing that. You'd think it would be time for a new way of approaching it now. Better food, beer entertainment on the concourse. Get people in an hour early to socialise. Have you seen the Dog Fuckeez match day menu? Independent beers and food. The Cunts.

Or getting the infrastructure right to make it a saleable asset If he invests X amount into our infrastructure it's just going to be added onto the overall price. Buy the club for £6M with a half decent infrastructure Or Buy the club for £5M and use X amount to build a half decent infrastructure. An investor will end up paying the same amount either way so not sure it will make a huge amount of difference.

Yeah, we're missing a trick. We've got some quality local breweries, some great local food establishments - lets get some proper ale and curry on the go. There aren't a huge number of decent pubs properly near the ground. Put a bit of money into it and it'd bring people in and get some more revenue into the club.

Rupp looks like he knows his shit. He's a successful businessman so he'll be familiar with the idea of speculating to accumulate.
The money on offer in the PL - and increasingly, the championship, mean he can probably see the merits of spending a bit to get us in there. You ain't gonna make money in League One.

A conversation I had at the Legoland tea bar some time ago (Bulls world club challenge, shows you just how long ago)
Me. Ooh, guest pie! What's that? Bint. It's a sausage roll. Me. Just the pint then please.
