having just watched the Merseyside derby and a piece on Jamie Vardy on the BBC sport website, just how important is pace in todays game? With the way the game seems to be developing with even full backs with speed in big demand is there any room in the game for technically good players that are slow? We used to have it with Nahki and its' the major thing that defenders hate because in certain situations you can't defend against it.

Presence is more important. And being tall. That's very important too.

Presence is more important. And being tall. That's very important too. Being able to defend corners if you are an attacker should come high on the list.

It is vital for all players in the modern game, thought you see some who are absolute freaks and use it to a huge advantage. But you need to know where you're going - running the wrong way doesn't help anyone, bearing down on goal makes defenders shit their pants.
I'd lump pace in with general athletic ability; things like fitness and strength, and in addition attributes like balance; compare Wyke to Hanson - Wyke looks like a ballerina and Hanson a one legged navvie.
Its one thing that has improved from top even way down into non-league, as its something taken more seriously, the information is out there, and is something you can develop at any level even if your football ability is crap.
I've just seen the goals from yesterday, and it was pace that did us. The Southampton lad certainly had some.

You need pace in your team. Not every player needs it, but I think you definitely need it in forward areas. Any by that logic, to defend against it, you need some at the back. Stick a young, very quick centre back next to Killa and even if he was a little raw and naive, I think we'd improve. Either that, or make sure we have it in both full back positions, and with players who have some experience.
Look at Robinson - defensively, he's a shit full back (and he's not a full back anyway). But his pace bails him out. A lot.
