It's one thing to sit back and defend. Its something else to not take your chances then get done from a fucking corner. Same problem with City for years upon years, doesn't matter who the manager or players are. We can never finish a game off or we end up hanging on for dear life. Just got back, it was actually a decent performance, we created the better chances in the second half but they fell to Halliday and Osadebe. Pointon was excellent. Very enjoyable evening. It sounded like we missed a few then got did with another set piece, but good to hear it was actually better than usual. Just typical there was no way of watching it. Probably a good thing these last 2 Cup games had not extra time as fitness seems to be a bit of a concern.

The little I’ve seen of Pointon he looks a live prospect. He looks to be very forward-thinking and attacking but we’ll soon coach that out of him. He looked levels above everyone else on the pitch for 45 minutes. Early days, but very promising. Good positional discipline but when on the ball he was always looking to make something happen and was so comfortable in possession. It’s unlikely to be sustainable over a season but playing without a focal point up front seemed to work last night - we played a lot more balls down the channels and turned their defence with runs from Walker, Smith, Osadebe and Pattison. Smith got through twice but was denied by the advancing keeper, Walker did really well to get to the byline but his pull back to Smith was just cut out. Think the players had an underdog mentality and it was for more interesting to watch and it was the most positive I’ve seen us under Hughes. You often see with young players when they break through, they play with a freedom that's a breath of fresh air. Then they get 'coached', and the flair drains right out of them.

Based on last night I’d hope that won’t be the case with Pointon, assuming he fulfills his potential - he’s not about fancy tricks or Hollywood passes, just give, go, move then look to receive and play again. Kind of like a more dynamic and forward thinking Josh Cullen.
