I'm still in two minds about this. Clearly it works, but it's a massive change to the game we love. It will mean to a stop to controversial decisions but controversial decisions are part of football aren't they? What do you talk about on a Monday morning 'around the water cooler' if the referee got everything right at the weekend?

I haven't seen it in operation yet but does the game stop for a quick review and interrupt the flow of the game? Would the other team have gone straight up the other end and scored and, if they did, would it be disallowed in some cases?
I agree with you on the controversy part. There's something both cathartic and Orwellian about the ninety minutes of hate when you get an inept referee and the rage that a scandalous decision can cause is also part and parcel of the fun. Football's already too sanitised, ironing out all of the creases might just end up spoiling it completely.

It's very similar to Rugby League. An initial decision is made (in last nights case - no goal, the player was offside), then the video referee communicates to the ref that he'd like to review it. The ref draws a rectangle in the air and then everyone waits... 60 seconds later the referee awarded the goal as the player was just onside.
It takes away the spontaneity of a goal, the initial euphoria is dampened straight away with the review and by the time it's given the moment has gone. At the end of the day though a tight call and an incorrect decision was rightly overturned.

I'm not really bothered either way tbh, I can see the argument from both sides. On a plus note, If it comes into league football it should make the Pulse slightly more bearable to listen to.

It'll go that way in football and every goal will take an age to award. Call the decision on the field and review in the background. Otherwise it'll kill the game.

Me personally, i would give the game as much video technology as possible if it meant an upgrade in the refereeing standards and the decrease in players cheating. There is nothing good about a ref getting a decision wrong just because its been like that for years. The video ref has been in use in rugby league for years and is now a fundamental part of the game. Its about time football followed suit.

The video ref has been in use in rugby league for years and is now a fundamental part of the game. Its about time football followed suit. I'm not sure you can compare it to rugby other than the principle of technology use itself. Football needs to flow and as the inevitable increased reliance on technology grew, so would the stoppages. How often do you hear it said that a team could do with halftime? Or how often do players feign injury simply to interrupt the momentum of an opposing team in the ascendancy? The less stoppages in a game, the better for me. Having said all that, I can see the arguments for simply getting the decision right so if the technology could be developed somehow so that contentious decisions were reviewed almost instantaneously then I couldn't see any decent grounds to object. The longer a referee stands in the middle of a pitch waiting for the word from his earpiece while all the players and crowd mooch around just waiting then the more ahm agin it.

Never understand why you need a little man dressed in black to wander about the pitch. There should be a guy watching on a screen making the decisions where he has a better view. None of this VAR shit though. Let it flow.

I do see the point that in 2018, with billions of pounds involved and worldwide tv audiences that they have to make sure big decisions are correct. It would just make everyone look stupid if with all the money, the millions spent on international players, the amounts invested in training, sponsorship, merchandise etc that a game can be decided by the ref getting something obvious wrong.

watching a stream of the spurs Rochdale game. Decent game but pales into insignificance to the comments section on the stream. If Rich Wilkinson is reading this do not, i repeat, do not watch streamspn, you may end up topping yourself if you read the comments section.
