They might as well come home now, save themselves from any further embarrassment.

I didn’t fancy our chances before the series but I honestly thought we’d put up a better fight than this. It’s getting to the point where it’s a worthless undertaking for both sides.

This has been a brilliant game, test match cricket at its best. Great comeback from England.

I thought it was dead and buried but, although Australia are still heavy favourites, I never thought we'd salvage a game after the first innings. Could Australia have had us follow on? If so, why didn't they?

The match wouldnt have been as good if a 1/3 or the game wasn't played under lights. It's always better viewing when the ball does something.

Our cricket has been too defensive. We desperately need Stokes back. I agree with this. We should be building a team around the likes of Stokes and Woakes. Stokes is a genuine, world class all-rounder and Woakes could easily become one. If these two get the experience and fulfil their potential, England could become a major force again.

If so, why didn't they? They could have made England bat again but decided against it. The Australian bowling coach has already admitted it was a mistake and apparently the bowlers had no say in the matter. Smith is going to come in for a lot of criticism if England somehow win.

Maybe aiming the game at a different audience will add to the crowd numbers. English cricket has always been tied in with tradition though, it took for the governing body to fully embrace the 20/20 competition like the aussies and the indians did. Like you alluded to i think the floodlights really add to the occasion.

It's rare these days you see a team enforce the follow on, get more runs in front for the safety aspect seems the way to go. 4th innings batting last is never a good thing.

Moeen Ali has greater potential to become a world class all rounder than Woakes imo. A very underrated cricketer. When was the last time we had 3 quality all rounders in the team? As good as they've been/are, they only make up for the top order woes. Unless we start producing quality test match batsmen, we'll stay exactly where we are.

We've got Cook, Root and Bairstow who'd get into most teams batting line ups. I think we're pretty good but lack a genuine fast bowler who can cause problems with pace and bounce on a wicket that's not doing much. Ali is an ok bowler but not top drawer and gets in the team on the strength of his batting as much as his bowling.
We're a bit short on batting apart from our best 3 which is why we're missing Stokes so much. Hales is back in contention but his test form isn't solid.
You never know in this match. 18 overs left until the new ball. If they can see the shine off the new ball in what will be the best batting conditions then they have a chance. They say the pink ball doesn't move around so much in the evening session when it's worn.
Fair chance it's all over before we get up in the morning too.
