Strangest game I've seen for a while. We were shit but had the best chances by a mile. Angol has no composure in front of goal but scores two including a last minute (terrible) penalty, but has a good game in terms of his link up game and work rate. Very strange. Defence coped OK with a lively Oldham attack and FCD was voted man of the match for putting up a decent resistance to being run absolutely ragged.

Angol’s finishing is shite.

Angol’s finishing is shite. No coincidence for me that the one he scored he had no time to really think about it, he just whacked it. That went through the keeper too. The penalty and 2 one on one chances he had were shocking finishes. Cook looked well pissed off with him.

Oldham looked the much better team, looked far more dangerous, but we had the best chances.

Vernam... our most dangerous player when he came on. Vernam’s a cracking player. He’s got quick feet and he’s actually got a footballing brain.

I enjoyed it, and thought we shaded it. Counter attacks were purposeful, if wasteful. Adam’s clearly set us up narrow and let them have the ball, made sure the spine was strong. Thought the atmosphere was decent too.
You lot are miserable cunts sometimes.
Gomp gomp.

I’ve not seen much of Eisa yet but to me Vernan is clear as our best winger.

Adams clearly sets his teams up to create good quality chances which may not be plentiful in quantity and thus need to be taken when they do come along. The two one vs ones today are the sort of chances that we’re going to have to take and Angol doesn’t look to be the most composed in front of goal. I wasn’t confident when I saw that he was taking the pen given his misses earlier in the game and it only just squeezed in.

Saw him grab the ball and thought don’t fucking let him take it!

We had the better chances but they had more of the ball and played the better football. Like I said earlier, if their winger up against FCD had half an idea we’d have been in trouble. We were lucky in that their guy who went past him at will didn’t do much with it when he got there. Overall I thought they were the better side but there wasn’t much in it.

Is it just me or did FCD get destroyed?:
He got MOM, Parker gave him a seven and I’m starting to see Tweets like the above. I thought he got bummed and his only contribution was a belting tackle on a guy who was offside.

He was much better 2nd half but he wasn't a mom for me, I'd give him a 6 but nobody on that pitch was above a 7.

To be fair to him we were that narrow he was often facing up to two of their lot. Tyler French was better than him.

When we win, it massively skews the reality of what happened. Some people are looking at it on the basis of 'Adams style is low possession so get used to it'. That wasn't a game where we sacrificed possession and controlled the game by choosing our moments. We could barely string 2 passes together for most of it, and the chances just came about randomly. We'rw obviously lacking quality and without adding more, we ain't going up.

To be fair Adams kept shaking his head and trying to sort things out, he looked particularly frustrated at Gilliead but never brought him off which was a bit strange. I do like Adams outlook and how he talks but his lack of tactical changes in these first 2 games negate what he says. Hopefully he's just trying to get a point across about lack of quality but we will see

It reminded me of the first home game when McCall first became the manager, versus Macclesfield I think. High expectations and a tangible belief across most of the support that 'we're going to walk this league'. Only to find that the division was far trickier than we thought and the squad wasn't particularly strong.
Oldham are far from a fancied team, but City struggled to break them down and were second best for large parts in midfield. I understand that Sparks is primarily a marketing man and since he took the reigns, this area of the club has certainly improved. But his messaging about how the club 'doesn't work in this league' and how Adams has been brought in for one thing; promotion, has lead many supporters to believe that the club is definitely going up this season. Unfortunately, the recruitment hasn't matched the marketing and messaging, IMO at least.
I don't think they're a massively different side from last season. There's still a lack of both goals and creativity. Angol looked busy, but lacked a finish. I hope they can build and become a difficult side to beat, which looks like what DA's after, but I'm struggling to see the team that played yesterday making a concerted push for an automatic place. As it stands, I don't think the advertising truly reflects the quality of the product. Sparks might be guilty of over selling but under delivering, when push comes to shove.
