Why, why, why do we never go for the jugular and properly hammer a team? I know but scores at HT don't always lead to big FT scores, but when have we ever done it? When did we last get 5/6/7?
They were there for the taking and a good chance to rack up a cricket score.
As decent as the first half may have been, the second was equally disappointing.

Southend like Mansfield and Stevenage were appalling and that bodes well for staying in the league but not all those in and around us are that bad. It's a welcome 3 points and hopefully a confidence lifter but there's a lot of tougher games to come and our next 2 in the league are Exeter and Salford. Let's see if the retarded gompers are still giving the shush sign to the realists after them 2 games.

It's a good thing we can score from midfield. Becuase our forwards are fucking useless. DMH must be the slowest fastest player you'll ever see. First half was good, second half was just alright I suppose. Had we had forwards who could actually shoot we would have 6 tonight. His touch is awful too. Two or three times he had the opportunity to run at them on the break. He either miss controls it or runs into defenders. Easy to see why he was released. Would rather have seen Samuels. Never had a good look at him where he actually has a chance of getting some service. Much needed 3 points though, better performance. Entire team looked shattered from 70 mins.

One thing that really stood out to me about last night is how this team needs to be much more direct. I’m not talking about direct as in the aimless hood but to get the ball forward much quicker. Up until last night we’ve pretty much passed it around three static lines before coming under inevitable pressure and working it back for a punt. Las night there was more movement off the ball and much more willingness to shift it through midfield and on. It was also noticeable how Cooke and Watt pushed on more and were in and around the edge of the penalty box more often. Maybe this was down to a more attacking ethos or even the presence of Pritchard (who I’m no fan of) and his willingness to sit and tackle.
For me the stand out lesson of the game was: attack more and stop playing for possession. Give the other side more problems and come under less pressure yourselves.
The negatives from last night were the odd performance (Donaldson kills as many moves as he aids with his fuckwittery and uselessness and DMH looks like he’s never played the game before) and the fact that all three goals came from the midfield. Obviously it’s good to get goals from all over but it was another blank from our impotent forward line and getting all our goals from midfield isn’t sustainable all season long.

Kiwomya was saying how great it was that goals are coming from all over. Normally I'd agree when your forwards are regularly netting. When they're not you're right, it's worrying and unsustainable.

What last night showed was pick your best eleven and you have half a chance of getting a result. Still glaring weaknesses that will hold back this team but at least we got some points on the board.

Agreed but I think we went about the game differently last night too. It’ll be interesting to see if we stick with it or make changes and how much of it was to do with Southend being shit and how much was us playing well. I think McCall will stick with the more attacking style for Tonbridge and Oldham but shit it and revert to type for Exeter, Salford and Leyton Orient.

Something thats puzzled me about McCall's comments this season, when he said "we could have matched them (Newport) up and gone for a 0-0 but we wanted to try hurt them, thats why I played that made up formation". Or something.
Anyway, why does he think that playing the same formation as the opposition will result in a draw? Its totally bizarre. Playing a different formation CAN give you the upper hand somewhere on the park but it always leaves you weaker somewhere else. Playing the same as the opponent doesn't necessarily mean cancelling each other out - if you play better than them you should win.

Matching up puts the anus on the players to perform, it's which team carries out their basic duties better. Hence why we don't do it and generally lose when we do.
