I reckon our last genuinely good attacking team was 1998-99. We scored 82 that season. We've never got 70 or more in a single league season since then. I'd say most of our managers were defensive, shit, or defensive and shit. I'd say McCall is moderately attacking and a decent manager. (I want a great, attack-minded manager but I think that means I''m entitled and I should go support Man City or Liverpool or something.)
Since we got relegated from the Prem in 2001 we've played 18 full seasons plus this year's abortion. We've scored 60 or more goals in 6 of those 18 seasons. Of those 6, McCall was in charge for 2007-08, 2008-09, and 2016-17. The others were Parky's promotion team in 2013, plus 01-02 under Jefferies and Law, and 2004-05 must have been Colin Todd.

I had three questions when McCall was reappointed and these were: 1) Can he change around a losing mentality? 2) Can he build a successful team from scratch? 3) Can he stop the brain farts? In answer to 1) it’s a no from me, we started off looking a bit better but we quickly reverted back to norm. This might be a little unfair due to him not having that much time with the squad but I don’t think it’s that harsh to say that he didn’t. For 2) its still to be seen and he will have one arm behind his back with recent events but to be honest, we won’t be the only ones struggling financially and if anything I think we could be in a better position because we don’t rely as much on match day sales. And 3) is a resounding no from me, Newport is an example coming to mind....hadn’t won in fuck knows how long and we decided to try to sit out a 1-0 lead. Shite! In regards to is he attacking, Hob makes a valid point about possession being mistaken for attacking when the real indicator is chances created. In the playoff final year, I think we managed to create 5/6 decent chances a game with one to two of them being clear goal scoring opportunities. He was let down by the strikers he had available to him (Bargefeet and a pirouetting Clarke), things did start to upturn when Wyke came in. Now I don’t know how many chances/clear chances normally happen in games but if I am right in the 5/6 chances, I would say that should be enough. This third spell, I saw nothing like the amount of chances from his second spell but I think his style is good enough for League One/Two and that it’s more down to the personnel being the issue. He will live and die by his strikers like most managers do, it’s the reason why he has made the recent comments about Vaughan. What recent comments has he made about Vaughan? I thought word was that we were trying to move him on. It was along the lines of “who wouldn’t want to work with him?”...either it was a sales pitch or he wants to keep him.

8 goals so far this season. 8 games. 3 of them at Mansfield.
No goals in the last two.
No goals from open play in the last three..

While the forward line again has to shoulder a lot of the blame here we also limit our chances by eschewing wingers. We play narrow, mostly to accommodate Clarke, and have a frontline with no movement. Imagine where that leaves you if you’re a central midfielder. You’ve got zero movement ahead of you and rarely have an option outside - you go backwards to a hoof merchant like BRE or to a dropping deep Clarke who invariably loses it. This team’s strengths begin and end with maintaining possession for a short while.

This team’s strengths begin and end with maintaining possession for a short while. I don’t even think they’re that good at maintaining possession. They don’t always look comfortable, at some point they will misplace a pass or get bored and usually BRE comes in like Peter Kay and shouts ‘Ave it and leathers the ball as hard as he can. It’s in fashion in the PL but they could use ROD coming out as a sweeper keeper if his distribution wasn’t so poor. Ignoring the front line for a moment they’re so predictable, last night second half was almost always down the right or a long ball from Watt or Clarke. Free kick on the right 30 yards out it’s Clarke or Watt doing the left or right foot dummy and it’s Watt doing a little jig and then landing it on a defender’s head.

'Attacking football'. Piss the fuck off.
I've got a 3 year old. Mum works a lot of Saturdays (pre covid). Sort of the age where I'd like to start taking her out on a weekend to go do stuff. Maybe even things like the football if Covid wasn't a thing.
Fuck that though. Absolutely not wasting mine and her time by taking her to watch this absolute doghsit we serve up on a regular basis. Would rather sit down and watch some Mexican cartel murder videos than get emotionally involved with this football club any more.

What it is is safe football. Lots of passing that achieves nothing. No incisiveness. No quick one twos. No cutting through balls. Nowt. It's safe and predictable. But because it isn't a McArdle-esque ball to Hanson's head a large proportion of fans mistake it for 'attacking football' and lap it up. #McCallBall

We actually managed twelve shots yesterday which seems high to me. Of those we only managed to get two on target. I’m guessing the reason it seems odd to the memory is that the quality of the chances created wasn’t that high and we were wayward with what we did create.
This isn’t attacking football.

Having a team that can't defend for shit doesn't make us an attacking side.
Every time I see their third I get angrier. Evans can go fuck himself. Clearly doesn't want to be here and, unlike Vaughan, can't even be fucked to be professional about it.

Evans is a seasoned L1 and L2 player who knows his way around a football pitch. If he could have got a foul on the guy he would have but he couldn't get near enough to leg him. He clearly wasn't fit enough to play hence hooked at half time. That's on Stuart and the backroom team. I called him a cunt at the time but on reflection, he shouldn't have been on the pitch.
