You think? Were they or weren't they? And why are they now all "strong" variants? Your statement throws up more questions than it answers. I dunno, I’m not an expert, i think there was no competitive advantage to being a stronger or more contagious version previously and there is now for some reason. At some point there probably will be a vaccine resistant version, like there is for flu each year. As far as I can see, at this point it’s not going anywhere and it’s gonna mean a new vaccine each year, and it will end up treated pretty much how flu is.

The talk of variants is just utter bollocks, it's what viruses do. But it gives the Tories a get-out for their appalling governance, and the people seem to be lapping it up, so expect to see more of it. It's not that their incompetence means that lockdown has lasted 6 months longer than it needed to, oh no. Here everyone is losing their shit because there's a cluster of about 50 cases brought in by a ferry worker. It's looking like lockdown. There's one person in hospital. But at least we here have had freedom in between the clusters, and if a short sharp lockdown is needed to keep that freedom then meh. Truthfully they've dawdled for a good 10 days, probably because the Chief was on Sky lapping up the praise about how we're managing, and annoyingly the lockdown will probably need to be longer than if they'd just done it a week ago. This first paragraph sums up my thoughts quite well actually. It’s not that I’m not concerned about losing liberties, it’s more that I’m confused why people aren’t fucking fuming at the government for the kind of incompetence that would get anybody else sacked on the spot (Johnson, Harding, Williamson). That and the banana republic corruption (Jenrick, Hancock, Sunak). I don't know why you're all not more angry either. I sit here and don't get it. We had a strict border. We had no social distancing from 21 June to 6 Jan, and again from 1 Feb to 2 March. That means pints and pubs. Our last "circuit breaker" was for 21 days and they pretty much stuck to it. After 3 weeks everything got lifted again. We've gone into another 21 day circuit breaker and hopefully we'll leave it in 3 weeks. I know it's a small island and yadda yadda, but still. If I was still living in England I'd be fucking fuming.

You think? Were they or weren't they? And why are they now all "strong" variants? Your statement throws up more questions than it answers. Viruses are pretty much the purest form of Darwinism. Viruses which are hugely contagious will spread faster than those thar aren't. So it's not a surprise that evolutions that spread quicker will become the dominant strains. It's partly why the strength of them tends to diminish too- viruses which kill their hosts quickly aren't as efficient at spreading.

We went from last March to December with not a single mention of variants. Since December they've been like buses. Are we supposed to believe that this virus suddenly decided to start mutating like crazy in time for Christmas? The Kent variant didn't suddenly decide to appear just in time for Christmas, it was identified in September. It will have been around longer than that, as we aren't doing genomic sampling for every case of coronavirus. We are doing more sampling now than we were - and the same's true for other countries. The reason more variants are being identified is at least partly because more testing is being done. Another reason is that it takes time for variants to appear anyway given they're a product of random mutations - you can't expect the virus to hit the jackpot the first time it plays the mutation game. What you need for variants to show up is plenty of time and plenty of infections - also, chronic cases where someone with a weak immune system is infected for months on end are ideal but these cases are going to be fairly rare as most people don't have a weak immune system and those that do are more likely to want to hide away from the virus. So there's nothing suspicious at all about the timing of the Kent variant. You might think there's something suspicious about when the government chose to announce they'd found the variant, mind.

It's refreshing to hear a rational and considered argument free of the usual finger pointing and passive aggressive undertones. I wonder what City's policy will be? My fear, as a vaccine sceptic city fan, is the vaccine gompers will turn on the 'deniers' if and when VP reopens. It could turn out to be one of Sparks' biggest calls as to whether or not unvaccinated people are allowed to attend matches (assuming the gov doesn't make it mandatory). No doubt he'll be terrified of tarnishing his reputation by going against the pro vaccine gomper herd. Unfortunately i think dissenting voices will be in the minority. It will certainly be a big factor in whether or not i renew.

A good friend of the wife's has developed a lump in the immediate aftermath of having had the jab. Tests apparently show the lump to be 'reactive but not cancerous' with more tests needed. Whilst attending the follow ups, she was apparently 'warned' not to speculate about it being any sort of reaction to the jab on social media.
But they didn't warn me, so there you have it.

I'm not having the vaccine.
I've run the numbers (not actually) and have decided that my risk from the vaccine is greater than my risk from Covid.

Seeing how the police are dealing with this vigil i'd say we've just about got to the point where people will do what they want. Although i dare say the thousands of people at these vigils would be the first to cry foul of anyone not obeying their fixation with social distancing. This government is a shambles, now hanging the police out to dry while shitmunching scaremongers like Whitty and Valance runnout of countries to name a variant after. Its a fucking weird world we live in at this very moment.

The whole thing has become a farce. The police aren't to blame for what happened at that vigil, they've been hung out to dry - again - by politicians who never take responsibility for creating the clusterfuck within which people have to do their jobs.
Anyway, I see that more countries are now suspending the Astra Zenica vaccine over blood clotting fears. I bet there's not quite as much risible contempt and piss taking of the plebs and anti-vaxxers on social media, at least for a day or two.

The police are to blame for what happened. Rangers fans the week before were given a free pass, the players were taking the piss in their celebrations too.
Of course Rangers fans tend to fight back pretty effectively whereas middle class women don't, so of course the police only got their shit-kicking boots out for the vigil.

The police have an impossible job at the minute. I won't deny that some are shits etc, but most want to do a decent job, for the right reasons. The bottom line is that vigil was illegal - that's not to say it should have been, but for months now, the government has been demanding that the police impose COVID restrictions rigidly. You can't be subjective about how the law is policed. Its a fucking mess, and its the politicians who've created that mess, plain and simple.

The police have no compunction about kicking the shit out of football fans. I’ve no idea why they got heavy handed with the women’s vigil and not the Rangers fans but to suggest the police held back because they thought they might take a pasting is pretty unlikely at best.
