I'm going to put the obvious stuff out of the way first: where I live has a population of 83,000, it has one airport and, unless you come in by fucking jetski, it has one passenger sea port.
But my experience here is definitely that enforced quarantine, strict border controls, and testing and contact tracing systems that work make a lot of difference. Since June we've had no social distancing rules at all. We went into lockdown on 6 January because of a community cluster, the people involved have all been traced and quarantined and so- fingers crossed- we come out of lockdown again on Monday. And by come out of lockdown I mean fully, domestically at least- we go back to no social distancing rules at all.
I know it's easier on a small island than on a big island. But still. Look at Australia and New Zealand, Australia having a crowd of 52,000 for the State of Origin game in Brisbane just before Christmas. I really can't believe just how bad the UK's response has been.
It's shite not being able to leave the island without having to quarantine for two weeks when we get back. But on the other hand we still have a functioning retail and hospitality sector and business was booming over Christmas.
Were you sat maskless in the pub from June to Christmas then? Lucky bastard. We have more cases in a day that the Aussies have had in a year. And they get better weather than us. And it's fucking miles from Valley Parade, giving them a great excuse not to watch City in 2020. Arseholes.

I seen somewhere yesterday that weve had the 5th most deaths out of all the countries, and the smallest country above us was Mexico. Fucking mad how shit our response has been. Meaningless comparison unless everyone is counting deaths in the same way. We won’t play a team the quality of coronavirus every week.

On the Isle of Man our social distancing rules ended on 19 June and only came back in on 6 January, so yes, we've been in the pub with our mates and without a mask since then. Social distancing came back in with lockdown on 6 January and, unless we get a community case over the weekend, will end on Monday.
I know it's a small island and yadda yadda yadda. But I can't believe just how different it is here.

I had to go to my office today, which is in one of the 11 postcodes they’re worried about the SA variant in, which I heard about on the radio on the way home. The council I live in doesn’t offer tests if you’re a asymptomatic.
It’s absolutely impossible this isn’t spreading everywhere. Our response to everything has been half arsed at every step.

My problem with the response all the way through hasn’t even been like hob saying that it’s not something to worry about, but that there’s no internal logic to what they’re putting in place. Plus bum stuff.

Matt Hancock threatening a 10 year prison sentence for breaking covid rules.
Shame he isn't so keen on rapists and paedophiles getting long sentences.

Matt Hancock threatening a 10 year prison sentence for breaking covid rules. Shame he isn't so keen on rapists and paedophiles getting long sentences. They've got to keep blaming the public and setting ever-harsher punishments. If they don't, people might remember that it's the government that left the borders open for 12 months, failed to introduce a working test-and-trace system, and let the NHS send patients with covid into care homes without even bothering to test them.

Shame really that the left wing hippies will br up in arms because The Sun printed it yet if it was The Guardian they'd be on board with it.

Anyone else very very uneasy with this? Everybody should be. Plenty will think it’s a great idea though. This has been in the works from the start. It’s the sort of thing that the so called conspiracy loons cited last summer, only to be derided on the basis of ‘it’ll never happen you idiots’. Through stealth, time and gullibility, it’ll be embraced by many.
