Personally I couldn't care less what he talks about. But if there's something in his work contract about it, however it's worded, then I'm not surprised if it's on that basis. When I worked in a government office I wasn't allowed to put political comments on social media. Yeah, I'm not a multi millionaire ex footballer but another example of free speech doesn't mean freedom of consequence. Thing is, why weren't any of these people so militant during the last WC? There specifically isn’t that in his contract, cos he’s a sports presenter. He’s been suspended cos he disagrees with the conservatives. This is about the government trying to control the state broadcaster, why do you think we end up with news presenters that can’t call Boris Johnson a liar, or someone who donated £400000 to the conservatives is later made chairman. And for a leftist organisation, they sure are run by a lot of tories. As I said, if it was in his contract. We don't know the details but there must be some ambiguous line about social media use, upholding the values of the BBC, behaving in a professional manner or whatever it's phrased as. If not then the BBC will need to sort out contracts to avoid similar situations in future. But, in fairness, I don't have a TV License and never watch any Beeb TV so I'm laughing at the whole situation.

And he's certainly embraced cancel culture himself when its politically convenient. If anything, i just see it as a power struggle between different factions of twats.

We actually do know, the impartiality rules have a specific exclusion for sports or entertainment presenters commenting in a personal capacity on political matters. The rules are different if you work in the news, but he doesn’t.

Lineker is a freelance broadcaster for the BBC, not a permanent member of staff, and is not responsible for news or political content, so does not need to adhere to the same rules on impartiality. His twitter remarks were made on his personal account, which does not include an official link to the BBC or MOTD in his bio. BBC guidelines note, however, that figures who are “clearly identified with the BBC” are expected to behave appropriately and “in ways that are consistent with the BBC’s editorial values and policies”. ---------- So yeah, I don't know. It's something of a grey area. I can bet though they're going to amending all the future contracts or work agreements where they can to covet things like this.

It isn’t a grey area at all, it’s cut and dry. He’s been suspended for criticising the government: 15.3.13 Where individuals identify themselves as being linked with the BBC, or are programme makers, editorial staff, reporters or presenters primarily associated with the BBC, their public expressions of opinion have the potential to compromise the BBC’s impartiality and to damage its reputation. This includes the use of social media and writing letters to the press. Opinions expressed on social media are put into the public domain, can be shared and are searchable. (See Guidance: Social Media) The risk is greater where the public expressions of opinion overlap with the area of the individual’s work. The risk is lower where an individual is expressing views publicly on an unrelated area, for example, a sports or science presenter expressing views on politics or the artswww.bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/guidelines/conflicts-of-interest/guidelines/

The Director General was asked if Lineker would have been suspended had he said the Government’s idea was brilliant. His response was that he wouldn’t be drawn on hypotheticals.
So that’ll be a “no” then.
Funny how it’s the Free Speech brigade who’ve pushed for him to be sacked.
