I seem to remember £8m being bandied about at the time. Imagine us getting £8m and the difference that would make to this club. We’d waste £8m on shite instead of the occasional £500k. £8m could buy the ground and a shit hot training facility that generated income. It wouldn't though, it would pay some 30+ footballers a pension as they ease into retirement with us for a couple of seasons in L2. From the outside looking in it seems so obvious why we’re such a hopeless case. We’re just so fucking listless. Nobody there has any kind of plan or idea how to make us work in the longer term. All we do is assemble an almost entirely new squad at the beginning of each season and sit back and see where it goes. When this hit-and-hope approach inevitably fails we just try it all again. We ‘go again’. In the meantime we come up with a new hashtag every so often and pretend we’re all part of something bigger. A family. A cause. Something to replace part of what’s missing in our turgid, worthless existences. And all for #onefournine. I wonder if tickets will still be a quid when we get to the Premier League now Edin’s gone. Now that was a long term plan.

Omari of course! Isn't that why he was given a three year contract so he had time to develop into the money spinner lurking inside his body?

Didn't Barnsley make a mint from John Stones? He went to Man City for 50m and they had something like a 30% sell on clause. I seem to remember £8m being bandied about at the time. Imagine us getting £8m and the difference that would make to this club. We’d waste £8m on shite instead of the occasional £500k. £8m, spent wisely, could transform this club. We'd piss it up against a wall though. Our core strategy should be to invest in a scouting system that allows us to sign the best players under 23 in the lower leagues of the UK, scandanavia and northern Europe. We could invest in an academy facility - and I'd support that route too - but its not cheap and the end results are less certain, though potentially more profitable. If we can genuinely establish ourselves as a feeder club for the big boys, you'd get a level of momentum. Regularly being able to buy players for ~200-400K and sell for 2-3m, then reinvest. A couple of cycles of that, and it becomes your core revenue stream that allows you to plan your budgets longer term. But it needs skill and money up front. That'd be my strategy if I were Rupp/the Owner, I'd be earmarking £100K a year for a couple of proven coaches, the same for a couple of scouts or a scouting service - you can buy into a scouting service on a subscription basis now too, you don't need your own. Somewhere in the region of £250k per year, for say 3 years. Throw in £2m and buy the best 5-6 players who fit the template you can find. A £3m investment. Done right, that should yield at least double, probably triple over a 3 year period. You're getting your money back, and creating several million to reinvest on a continual basis for the club to grow. I know its not as simple as that, and as with all strategies you have to adapt to challenges and obstacles. But as a baseline strategy, its got to be better than whatever the fuck it is we've been trying over the last 2 years. And that'll probably cost £3m too, with fuck all return on it.
