A simple, effective, tried and tested formation, familiar to every footballer in the UK. It's dull and unfashionable but it's safe, rigid and secure. The beauty of it is in its simplicity. You don't need to spend hours on the training pitch sorting out who should be where and when, the players already know.
Can't help thinking this would suit our rabble who look like they've never played together every week, particularly the defence. The Blackpool goals are like action replays of goals we've conceded all season. The defence all over the place, looking exposed, confused, shite.
People might say we haven't got the wide players to play the system and I agree that square pegs in round holes aren't ideal but Wood and Ball could play out wide effectively. We also had a window to recruit players that was wasted.
We seem to try to find a formation that allows us to get all of our midfield and forward talent on the pitch to help us to score goals but it's the goals against that are costing us week in and week out. 5 at the back, 3 with 2 wing backs, 4 with 2 midfielders sitting in front but no wide midfielders protecting the fullbacks. We're asking too much of third tier players to be so flexible and knowledgeable.
It's too late now but HopkinS and perhaps even Bowyer should have kept it boring, simple and Parkyesque.

OD Caddis POC Staunton Wood Colville Butterfield LOB Payne Ball Miller
I don't want the chuckle brothers and their ugly stepsister in our back 4 ever again. I don't want Akpan or Anderson in the side ever again.
And Doyle can fuck off too.
Miller's shit but at least he can run.

If we ever call for a referendum on our next manager/coach/whipping boy, you can rely on my vote. You're the man! Strong and stable!

I don’t think formation or system matters much at this point. You’ve got to do the basics no matter what, and we’ve not managed that all season.
Like OP says we’ve literally got no wide men. So you can shoe horn Ball or whoever there, but he’d be more effective up top. But who do you partner him with? Doyle can fuck off, so that leaves Miller. Unless we go full bat shit and stick Clare in there? Then there’s the midfield two. I’d say ideally a hard cunt type, that we don’t have, along with Butters. LOBs work rate is generally good bet he’s just a kid, physically he’s going to have little impact there. Akpan is all show and no go. Wright is pointless. Colvile looks ok but again not really what you’d want in that position.
tl,dr: systems are moot when 90% of the players either don’t give a shit, are just shit or have became so mentally fragile after so many batterings they are shit scared to go near the ball.
Going into next season I’m all for it, lord knows we’re going to need some shit houses in the building down there. Our team looks like gnomes in this division they’ll look like a youth team in League 2. Get some athletes in: tall, strong, hopefully a sprinkling of pace. Professional mentality. Train hard, turn up, do your job with some pride.

Chicksen standing in our penalty box like a fucking lemon for their third isn't owt to do with formations or systems or tactics. Being charitable it's because he's scared to put a tackle in after that bad injury. Not being charitable, it's because he plays like that bad injury was to his brain.
Three managers and nothing changes. I really don't think we can blame Bowyer for this.

Lots of teams have to carry weaker players. Our shit players don't get any protection, if anything they get further exposed.

Trouble is, we have nine weaker players. 4-5-1 puts more in the middle to try and protect Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber at centre back. 4-4-2 wouldn't change anything, if anything it'd cause us to stop protecting the centre backs.
